ROFL, I just stumbled over a youtube video where someone called it Monkey X 2.

It is called Monkey 2. Not, MX2, not Monkey X 2, not Hugo, not Fritz.

If anything, you could call it M2 I guess. Same as people refer to Monkey X via MX.

How do people expect to find Monkey 2 related content when everyone names it like they want to. 😀

I’ve always called it MonkeyX2 or MX2 as it’s the next MonkeyX version.

MX2 is an easy abbreviation M2 is a metric nut size so you’ll just get swamped with irrelevant results…

We were calling it MX2 before it had a real name.  Kind of like calling a new baby some cute nickname and they get older and complain about it.  Hard to stop calling them that.  🙂

Well, Mark changed the name in the past so the confusion is ‘normal’ at this point.

    Monkey
    Monkey X (MX1)
    Monkey X 2 (MX2)

    Calling Monkey2 it’s a non-sense 🙂
    (I translate MX2 in ‘Mark eXperiment 2’ …)

You ever did a google search for monkey language? There is some pretty bizarre stuff showing up, like: “How to speak MONKEY: Researchers uncover primate language” ^^

yep I tried to field getting monkey2 file extension changed to mx2 and Mark didn’t like it. It’s actually a very small change in the code to do. then we could have dumped monkey and the bananas stuff – never mind!

It’ll always be MX2 to me.

I was telling someone on twitter about it and they asked “What is Monkey X 2” and I started to describe it. “Oh! Sounds a lot like BlitzBasic” they said. “Same guy who built it!”

How about BlitzMonkey? It feels natural given the heritage and lots more people are familiar with the Blitz compiler and IDE.

Come on guys, @mikehart made a very valid point and you seem to have missed it.  Look at the top of the screen, next to the logo.  It doesn’t say ‘Monkey X2’ or ‘MX2’ or any other mixture of whatever name you think it ought to be.

It says ‘Monkey 2’.  In the online documentation it says ‘Monkey 2’.  In the URL it is ‘monkey2’.  The author of the software has called it Monkey 2.  That is its name.  Like it or not, that is what you should call it.  Branding is important, and consistency is important to strenghten a brand.  If you want to see your favourite languate succeed long term, give it some respect.

Python is a ssssilly name.  Lisp always makes me chuckle.  ‘D’ got a lot of slack for being ungooglable but it is still a fantastic language.  If I created a language, I wouldn’t choose to give it a pink logo and name it after an animal.  But that doesn’t mean I should poke fun at anybody else that does.  I love coding in Monkey and will do anything I can to support Mark in pushing Monkey 2 (and 3 and 4) to its limits and beyond.

Monkey 2 is fine, ultimately the biggest selling point will be what’s produced with it. I think a better job could be done showcasing there, wasn’t necrodancer a monkey game? Any hit game should be showcased and if possible interview them for the site, why they chose the language etc., I’m sure they’d be happy to in most cases.

Anyone watch the Johnathon Blow vids where he discusses the language he’s making? I find those really interesting, it’d be good to see something like that from Mark discussing various progress and features in Monkey 2 if he’s up for it 🙂 I think they’re a good way to drive a bit more traffic and sell it a bit more. I think I’ll probably do that a bit next year depending on where I am with projects – then when you see how crap I am it might inspire a bit more confidence eg: https://youtu.be/1yelQRZ8LjE 🙂

Maybe something Playniax folks can do too, to promote their framework and monkey at the same time?

I just read a comment by arpie that Mark called it MX2 in some of his blog posts. I didn’t know that he was also inconsistant in his branding. Guess it is ok then.
