I just put Monkey2 on the best 2d engine list on slant, it was not on it yet. MonkeyX was in the top 3 for a long time but is lower now.

Maybe people who can describe it better can add pro’s and con’s. I am not that good in that. And maybe we can recommend it also.

And don’t block your followers on twitter – because it’s not a good marketing strategy

Sorry, but I can’t live my life based on a ‘good marketing strategy’. I will tone down the swearing (I’m not normally a swearer, well, I try not to be), but I should have blocked that guy on twitter from the get go as it would’ve saved me from telling him to f#^*k off. And twitter is very much part of my life, it’s actually probably the last bit of the internet I actually enjoy these days!

I am a bit sorry for what I said on twitter, but only a bit, as he made my life really unpleasant over the last 6 months of monkey-x. It’s no doubt partially my fault – I should have said something to him privately (he may not even know he was doing it) but instead I just avoided him altogether, to the point where I wouldn’t even read threads if I saw his name because, you know, you can’t offend the customer, and it just became easier to ignore him. Any other other ‘reluctant community managers’ out there? Any advice?

So for people who wonder why I have ‘pulled away’ from the community over the years, I suspect this desire to ‘not offend’ anyone is part of the reason. As I have discovered over the years, the easiest way to ‘please everyone’ is to just shut the hell up as much as possible and to offer as few opinions as possible. But I still seem to end up blowing-up now and then anyway, so it doesn’t really work! Also, it sucks having to remain so ‘reserved’ at all times when your job and you life intersect as much as mine do.

In terms of twitter, what I probably need to do is resurrect the @blitzresearch account, but I’ll save that for my fantasy marketing guy (must be a monkey lover). My priority right now is to get my real world s#*t together, ie: get a consistently paying job so I don’t have to worry about that side of things.

    And wot secondgear said…

As I see it, most of us here are not really business skilled and most don’t own a business or have a business income. so our opinion can’t really be used as a reliable source. And even those that have a business, their formula isn’t a fit all solution.

There are many things that I can tell you you did wrong but 1) it’s just my opinion and since I am not a business expert so it’s not worth much and 2) it’s all just water under the bridge. Nothing can be done now. I suspect deep below you know what you did and are doing wrong. but the condition you are in doesn’t leave you many options to follow. I know I have been there and I am still trying to get out of the swamp waters I got myself into.

I read the opinions of others here and think that some make sense while others are just blah, blah, blah.

I think the main problem here is lack of trust in people. With all my respect to you Mark, I see it reflected in your work and your personality based what you post here. Again, same thing with me. it’s easy to say it but so hard to do the actual change.

Anyway Mark, good luck, I’ll be here for as long as I can. backing you up. wishing you stick around for many more years. I think Monkey2 is a great language. I just wish you had the confidence and trust in others to help you bring it to what I think this language can be. GREAT!!!!

    PS
What we need now is some good Marketing and great documentation.

    Ops Had to say it!

I feel like I’ve missed some drama.
I can certainly understand if Mark doesn’t feel like being nice every single day.
Where is this famous “swearing”, and who’s been blocked on Twitter? 😮

    Oh well.
I’m so glad Monkey 2 will continue to live!
I wish you the best of luck Mark.

And I’ll vote for Monkey 2 on Slant!

I think the most important thing is enjoying what you do, if you don’t enjoy your work, why keep doing it?

    Ref Monkey:

Monkey is a great product, it offers an easy programming language that makes development fun which is the main
objective. I think full-time employment is a great move by Mark as this could provide a much needed distraction. Monkey2 as a side project could help not hindrance development, gaining insight and experience from alternative employment (assuming it’s within the tech industry). This could possibly open doors not close them.

One thing I would say is “You don’t need a Monkey lover” to be honest I would prefer someone to give you the honest unvarnished opinion if something is wrong I would prefer to know than someone goes “It’s brilliant”.

What monkey needs is someone pushing Monkey everywhere on Facebook, Google+, Twitter and where ever else they can. Also writing tutorials on it as well is a big plus as it will help and would get Monkey noticed.

For example at present it needs music playback this would help no end 🙂

I am new to Monkey and Blitz but not new to BASIC.  Grew up on QuickBasic.  I am diving deep and hope to become a substantial contributor.  Monkey2 from what I can tell so far looks fantastic.  I hope it’s not going anywhere.

Step away! I didn’t realize how much self moderation had been weighing me down until I read your post and reflected on my own experience as an RCM. There is plenty of scope for user engagement on github and until the community starts producing items of interest I don’t see much point in “spamming the crap” out of facebook and twitter.
