i have to say im disappointed in you Simon if ur not joking no one should be telling people that if you dont tow the line we will kill of a website that has so much history and resources.

i remember buying db-wee of you over a decade ago and you was just as involved in the intense discussions and arguments that were around then so why stop the kids of today from doing what alot of the people here have done.

if you dont like an opinion ignore it but for some of us we have concerns that it might go the way of blitzmax.

alot want to make sure that Mx2 will be a full time project and wont be given up after a year or 2 who wants to keep relearning new Syntax.

for me i just dont want to learn a new language if its not going to last.

This on the face of it looks like an example of what I’m discussing in this thread. Are you referring to a thread outside of this one? Because Simon (Simon Armstrong)  has said nothing of the sort  here. It appears that you have not read through this thread and carefully identified the subjects author. Also this thread does not imply terminating the BlitzMax website but the forum. Perhaps it is me that you should be kindly discussing opinion and ideas.

We should not allow this kind of statement personally identifying an individual not even involved in this threads creation. DaY, please clarify your statement and please be civil and respectful to anyone you personally identify or respond to.

DaY is quite correct. Simon had edited out those comments referring to shutting down the forum.

If i remember right there was something about “getting rid of barnacles”

And @Richard, there was no personal attack on you. even if you took it as such, but come on?

Whatever has got you riled up over on the Blitz forum, that is no reason to ‘shut it down’ because you don’t like it!

One could take your sentiments as being incredibly passive aggressive.

The above post #6654 is now looking great (for you) because the referring post was changed to remove those sentiments.

It would be better to close the thread and all those concerned calm down a bit and not change things to alter previous comments. maybe I should go and edit my post to ‘think happy thoughts’?

    Adam,

If a post was removed/edited , well then DaY’s comments may not have been out of place per-se.

Why am I pushing this discussion on the BlitzMax forum? It has a systemic issue with civility and decorum. For my part I see no point in perpetuating a culture of  personal attacks and ill will. I and others should not subject to speech that crosses the line and makes individuals feel assaulted or the focus of unwanted and undeserved speech seemingly intended to harm. This culture of insensitive and at times harmful speech has no place in this forum or in the BlitzMax forum. It should not be tolerated or allowed in the world we live in today.

I believe I speak for many individuals participating in the BlitzMax forum that wish to have meaningful discussion free of speech that is intended to harm, bully or inhibit respectful and civil discussion. For my part I just can not idly sit by anymore and endure it. Why should I or any other individual be subject to a forum environment that allows speech as I’ve described it? It should be moderated and if that fails it should be closed.

I intend to bring light to this subject and change the dynamic.

That’s correct. Simon Armstrong said he wants to shut down the BlitzBasic forums
for a while, and then make it subscription-based.

Take the free stuff people are used to, and you get a war with hateful speeches.

Althought I understand what you are saying, Richard… and I generally agree –
but taking down the Blitz3D/Max forums and changing it to a subscription model
will only increase hate within the community.
Yes, there are persons working against latest BRL stuff, and it would be nice
if this persons would leave… but forcing the leave will create big resistance
    and a virtual war.

Like I said before: Many people really hate Microsoft for stopping at VB6
and moving on to .NET – but does all those hate help anyone? I don’t think so!

Please remember, we are all human beings! Human beings with a lighted candle
within our hearts! Everybody can feel it, if one looks inside him/herself.

We should not destroy each other, instead we should help each other!
The only way to live a good life is to help each other and support
mother Nature as good as we can. Respect the green leaves and fruits,
the brown trees, and the water!

Human beings should concentrate on working together to archive great things!
“Making money” is a false goal for your life. Just GIVE whatever you can GIVE,
is much better… and makes you really happy and satisfied!

Imagine a world without war between people, where everyone can live happily
to full extend and with peace and freedom…!

Go into the forest and embrace (give a hug to) a tree. Pure love within your heart…
that’s what human beings need to re-discover!

I reconsidered my Violent Femmes / Tintin reference and self censored. I now regret my actions.

The brl forums are important. Everyone there who’s a sceptic today, can be a convert tomorrow. How to convert? Make amazing stuff with Monkey 2. Get coding peeps 🙂 Actions speak louder than words and all that.

Looking at the visual stuff (View class), i can imagine some really nice
GUI that looks nearly like native stuff. Like QT, but native MX2.

I’m really interested in those stuff, and I think if we have some functions
for getting real screen resolution, real screen DPI, and some system informations,
like system platform (iOS, Android, HTML, Windows, macOS, Linux), it would be
possible to write really platform-independent games and applications with a nice look.

I have 9 days time now, starting tomorrow, and I have to study the widgets code (mojox) now.
Would be easier if every class and struct would be documented properly, but unfortunately
that’s not the case. Anyway, I already see good-looking stuff in my virtual eye… 😉

From the point of view of a ‘BlitzMax’ user, when MonkeyX1 was launched with an independent website I was thinking “wow, BRL this time has big ideas and MX1 seems very promising”.
Eveyone known that BlitzMax was OK, it was ‘mature’, it was (is) working without (too much) problems on 3 different platforms and – only in rare case – a ‘support’ from BRL was/is necessary/needed to continue to use it.
    And this is the situation.
Splitting the community – at the time – was a consequence of the different nature of the language… many users (myself included, I’m using BlitzMax for desktop applications) look at Monkey1 like a ‘toy maker’ (just the HTML5 target has some potential for ‘working’ application in my view).

Then Mark decided to suspend Monkey1 (it’s mature, it’s too complicated to evolve, it will be just maintained). AND Mark moved to Monkey2 openining a new website for it.
    Again faraway from Blitz-thingy…

From my perspective this seems to indicate that ‘Blitz-userbase’ is just a brake, a weight to development… I see ‘this’ forum a sort of home for an ‘elite’… people (very) talented but ‘superior’ to the ‘simply’ Blitz-people.
I know I’m not a pro-programmer, I know my limits, but splitting & separating the user base was not a big move (in terms of market) and in terms of support I believe.
Even in BlitzMax forum there are (were) people very talended in other advanced languages… I would prefer that Monkey2 had ‘home’ in its roots (BlitzMax): even Mark wrote that Monkey2 takes something from BlitzMax (modules logic etc).

I just want to say that is most probable that a BlitzMax user looks at Monkey2 (comparing syntax & features) in the same forum than jumping here… with a decades of ‘code-base’ I would prefer to find the ‘blitzmax’ version and the ‘mx2’ version (like the B3D or BlitzBasic version actually).

    End of rants 🙂

I do not see why there should be a need to kill off the legacy Blitz languages because mx2 is more shiny.

When Mx2 does everything that all the previous brl languages have done then maybe but it’s not good to upset the applecart because there might be a ideal.

@richards just to add my 2cents… think of it as quarantine, it stays there and doesn’t affect us, if its gonna happen its gonna happen. i joined a racing forum and people wanted a certain thread shut down for bashing the game and devs and just lots of negativity, and the devs thinking ahead said no lets give them that room cause it will just keep happening for one and it will spill over to other threads…so it might not be a bad thing. i read most of this so hope im not off topic.

Blitz is now open source and free. Legacy infrastructure has been put in place to show good faith and a small financial investment made to secure the value of the archives and provide continued community for active users.

It is not a place for inactive users and I think it is unreasonable to expect it to provide a platform stale BUID holders feel welcome to spout opinions on. Mark Sibly, Richard Betson and a host of other users have all expressed their dismay at the toxic environment inactive and destructive the code-illiterate opinion holders have created.

code-illiterate? it seems you are going of the elitism end these days and with an attitude like that maybe i would be better of were ever you are not present.

I am encouraged by what Simon outlines and thankful.  I hope this move brings back focus on the task at hand which is friendly discussion on language related topics.

Thank you for listening and taking action.
