Am I dreaming or did we just hit the $1,000 Patreon goal?
January 14, 2017 at 12:41 pm #6497Well… I suppose if we sum the Patreon+PayPal donate that amount was already reached.
In any case, good for Mark, and I hope it will be a ‘constant’ not just a ‘spike’…January 14, 2017 at 2:15 pm #6500How the …. what the … am I dreaming?
I’m happy as a clam for Mark !
January 14, 2017 at 4:54 pm #6501Wow!
January 14, 2017 at 7:57 pm #6504Nice indeed!

True. I have been donating regularly via PayPal myself but have rejoined Patreon now, hoping they have learned their security lessons from the 2015 hack.

I think so and many users have stuck with them. The hack was mostly caused by growing pains and inexperience. I’ve been using Patreon to support Monkey 2 since Mark stated his page there. I like the Patreon model and recommend using it.
I bet Mark is happy. He puts out the call for financial support and it shows up. That’s got to be a boost to the coding spirit.
January 15, 2017 at 1:16 am #6518Great news! I have a feeling that someone probably pledged a large amount to get the remaining amount over 1k which if that’s the case then it’s a little bit dependent one person who might change their mind, but who knows.
If Mark announces he will start on a 3D module then that will generate a lot of interest/enthusiasm that may add some more pledges to give some more buffer. To capitalise on that the Patreon page could do with a few more higher pledge incentives, like early alpha/beta access to developer builds. I’d also suggest a pledge that gives access to a private forum where Mark can give general dedicated support and expertise, $25-$50 for that wouldn’t be unreasonable.
I’d be happy to pledge a bit more for early access and start on TimelineFX 3D
January 15, 2017 at 5:03 am #6522a private forum where Mark can give general dedicated support and expertise, $25-$50 for that wouldn’t be unreasonable.
That might be a good idea. I do see some issues for Mark. At present he can offer support when he has time or when it makes a difference. So setting up a dedicated support structure requires him to set aside time. Pricing this kind of specialized support at a $20-25$ level I think makes sense as serious developers are the ones likely to take advantage of this kind of thing. These kind of enhanced support patrons are also likely to be easier for Mark to support. I know I would like this as it would allow me to bug Mark for support and not feel like I’m bothering him, pulling him away from other tasks.
I’m already a patron at $10 (was $8) so going to $20 might fit my budget. Patronage at $20 a month ($240 a year) would be worth it for dedicated support (although $15.00 is a better fit for me). If Mark can continue to provide casual support in addition, I can see this as good option.
January 15, 2017 at 7:26 am #6524I hope Mark will follow up what he wrote in the blog at the start of the year – at last the one I consider important
Write/sell a simple game in mx2 both to raise funds AND to have a decent ‘this was written in mx2’ demo.
Everything then will be a simple consequence of this (demo, marketing, publicize MX2 and ‘monetization’ of modules).
More users probably more supporters.
One (or more) games means (maybe) money AND (if they are developers or interested in) new user ‘beyond the blitz’3d module – in my vision – should be one of the ‘monetizable’ thing for MX2 – and I think Mark could/should make a proper section of the ‘WIP’ (maybe with screenshot, video, piece of code etc) of those modules: it helps to publicize them.
January 16, 2017 at 9:01 am #6564After finishing Silent Depth (my 3d submarine game) using Unity I’d love to create something similar using Monkey 2. Initially I used Monkey 1 plus minib3d but it had some drawbacks which I simply could not resolve so I moved to Unity. But I still prefer Monkey over everything else!
January 18, 2017 at 7:22 am #6600As has been asked on the original Blitz forum is this a guaranteed $1000 a month or will something happens should it fall below the $1000 due to pledges changing options etc?
January 18, 2017 at 11:17 am #6614Assuming there are no *extremely* negative currency exchange rate variations / economic events, the Patreon pledge total will remain above $1,000 for the next 12 months – I have personally committed to keep it there (to Mark, via email exchanges) and set aside the necessary funds to do so. (I have a private, proven history of repeated “higher level” donations to BRL).
That said, I’m hoping the burden won’t fall exclusively on my shoulders (but I’ll *happily* accept that responsibility if necessary). Every single dollar pledged is *important*, and not only because it’s a nice boost to the total – it’s also a nice boost for morale! Even if you can afford only one dollar per month it shows a genuine interest in the project.
A software engineer of Mark’s caliber could earn considerably more than $1,000 per month if employed by a company, as I’m sure you’re all aware, so I think it’s a bargain price to employ his services through Patreon.
Besides, I think we’re all keen for a nice little 3D engine from Mark.
January 18, 2017 at 11:44 am #6615impixi that’s very generous of you. Let me assure you that I stand on your side in case it drops below $1k.
