Oh hello.
I learned of this on Socoder, which is mostly where I lurk these days. I was about to post a reply there, then thought, where’s the sense in that? Mark isn’t likely to see it.
So… here’s [the censored version of] what I was about to post there:
Just been having a read of that thread on the Monkey2 forum… it speaks bloody volumes that there’s probably only 10 or 12 people bothered to comment on it. Back in the day if he’d said “I’m chucking in Blitz3D”, there would have been hundreds of cries of “NOOOOOOOO” within the hour. But the audience seems to have got less and less with each iteration.
Been giving it some thought and, issues of language abandonment aside, Mark is one person. He isn’t the entire Unity development team yet that seems to be what he thinks he’s competing with. I mean… for f***s sake, they employ 1200 people or something? To be of the idea that you can single-handedly create a language that is all things to everybody, is just f*****g ridiculous.
With that in mind, and the fact that most platforms – most notably Android and iOS – are completely bereft of any quality control and consequently a waste of time nowadays, I would ditch the lot and bring my focus back to Windows and Mac. Screw everything else.
Mark – I dunno if you’re reading this still. But maybe you’re at a point where you think perhaps you’ve taken too much on and feeling overwhelmed with what you think is expected of you? I mean… Jesus… one bloke, trying to make a feature-complete development system that’s bug-free on all these platforms (with said platforms like iOS moving the damn goalposts with every update), while things like Unity roll along with thousands of employees… I don’t know, but I know what I’d think if I was in your position. I’d just curl up in a ball in the corner. I can’t speak for anybody else here (well, maybe a few) but I owe my coding life to three people; François Lionet, a guy called Phil Wilkinson who nobody here will have heard of, and you. Even though I’ve moved onto other languages now, I’m still grateful for the tools I was given 25 years ago. Without Amos/Blitzbasic, then who knows? I might have had to *gulp* get a “proper job”. Amos, Blitzbasic, even up to the PC version including Blitz3D and BlitzMax – knew exactly what they were and didn’t try to do any more than that. They did one job, and did it very well.
I’m not sure the number of target platforms for Monkey/Monkey2 are either realistic, or necessary. Is it really what you want for Monkey2?
As above… time to refocus? Because if this is grinding you down then yeah, may as well just hang up the keyboard. I did the same thing two years ago. It all became a chore and I’d had enough of it.
They’re just predefined constants for basic color definition – common in many languages.
WB!
Windows Movie Maker??? Can you even get that for Windows 10 any more?
I used Sony Vegas years and years back when I used to do wedding videos. Adobe Premier was bloody awful, by comparison. Of course, Vegas isn’t owned by Sony any more. So I just plumped for the middle-of-the-road Platinum edition which was about £70.
Bit pricey to make one video, but hey-ho… would like to think it’s the first of many.
Aw Christ…. apparently I *have* to make a promotional trailer. Did not see that curveball coming…
Haven’t used Vegas in years…. this could take a while. :/
This is the EXACT point you realise you’ve got all that speed, and bugger-all that you want to download.
Probably, as from what I can gather that’s the only way to get access to the API/docs. You’d think they’d want to encourage language support.
Glitch in the matrix, maybe, but I just logged into my Steamworks account and everything’s now been verified – but they didn’t send any email notification of this. Something to watch out for possibly if anyone else is awaiting verification, too.
Will start fiddling with it tomorrow, see what occurs.
According to the bb.com homepage, the alpha version is available now, but I don’t see any mention of that here?
I think you should nail down a language and just crack on now. This has been going on since the Blitz3d days and I’ve lost count of how many times you’ve restarted it.
I’m not optimistic that you’ll ever finish it but happy to be proven wrong.
Thanks – just signed up and paid the ransom. Waiting for verification now.
The W-8BEN section needs MUCH better explained. Tax stuff is always a pain in the arse – especially when dealing with foreign terminology. Some of it may as well have been written in bloody Chinese.
Thanks for the links.
Just looking at other solitaire games on Steam and came across a couple of yours. How come you’ve pitched them so cheap? One of them is only £1.99, less a 20% discount which drops it to £1.59.
Is that all we’re worth these days?
So, do they put their own wrapper around it like BFG et al?
I was under the impression that the Steamworks SDK left it up to me to implement stuff which connects with their servers. If not, what exactly is it for?
Thanks for the info. Is it worth having solitaire games on there?
[edit] Jesus… just been having a look. Tried to download the Steamworks SDK but I apparently can’t unless I give them $100 first. I had a read through what I could see of the documentation and without access to the SDK to experiment with, I’m at a total loss as to how to get Blitzmax (or Monkey2) to a state where it’s acceptable.
Any pointers on what to expect, greatly appreciated. $100 isn’t much but I’m not about to flush money down the toilet without knowing what I’m getting myself into.
So, this Steam Direct thing then…
Is it like, “pay $100, guaranteed distribution via Steam”? Or is it “pay $100, and we’ll definitely or most likely possibly at some time or other have a look if it’s any good, if you’re lucky”?
What I’m getting at, is, is there potential for instant and total loss of your $100 if they choose not to publish? Reading the Steam blog on the subject does not seem to touch on this eventuality.
