Just quickly popped in to say:
Noooooooooooooooooooooo!Monkey2 is such a nice language! It’s literally the perfect combination of cross platform and clean!
I don’t get to monkey a lot at the minute as well my “day job” (and late night job) are currently consuming my hours to the extreme!
I always have monkey2 in the back of my mind though.
My only suggestion would be maybe get in a touch with an experienced community manager/marketing person. Maybe even a publisher (again)? All monkey needs is some eyeballs on it and things could improve! Obviously that all costs money, but maybe you can find someone who is willing to take a cut of future profit? Who knows, but it really would be good to get some professional eyes on the “business” side of things.
Maybe.) This time you can rebuild module by Right-Click on module folder in Project file browser.
Ah neat, this is more than suitable. Perhaps a “rebuild using last settings” would be good here too? So its a 1 click module build.
Feature request:
Would be nice if Ted2go detected if a file tab is a module (by looking if it has a module.json matching the filename). Then if it is, give the option/icon/keyboard-shortcut for user to “build module”.
Any chance this can be moved to the “code library” forum? Cheers
Yeah this is correct, the language is a serious contender for all types of devs, but if the name “monkey” is hindering progress even slightly, it’s sensible for people to voice their concerns (albeit the same old topic that has repeated).
Discussing the name isn’t going to hold back the language, and if something comes out of it (whatever that may be) then its productive to have the conversation again.
it could also be an age thing I spend half my life telling my kids to stop being little monkeys and behave and a lot of parents I think do the same, so in our mind we associate monkey with silliness.
also can you call the sample folder samples it took me 10 mins to find them as it didn’t cross my mind on bananas LOL
just that its hard explaining to you friends that I been trying out monkey2 with out them pissing them selves laughing.
Yeah this, it definitely rings of “silly monkey”, “silly billy”, etc.
Not sure what you mean here by ‘target their audience a little better’…these names are, IMO, just as meaningless as ‘monkey’, and these languages are not well known due to any slick marketing or because they have ‘Zap’ or an ‘X’ in the title, but because they are actually *good* at what they do. I think monkey1 has managed to make a little headway here too – ie: things like new star soccer, the necro dancer game etc
Well my comment was subjective for sure, but my meaning is that while they are all meaningless names, some of the bigger name languages/programming environments have words that sound more programmerish. Again this is in the eye of the beholder, but to me if you said say “gears” I might think technical/programming; if you said “pigeon” I might think messaging/communication; if you said “juiced” I might think a plugin/enhancement. Certain words have an implied meaning, which is just an added bonus to overcome that discovery hurdle. That is echoing what shinkiro said too.
I must admit though I did not realize Europeans had such a crappy opinion of monkeys. Here, they’re generally regarded as fun, cute, playful, clever etc, all generally cool+laid-back+positive. Perhaps I would not have gone with monkey at the outset if I had known this.
Yet the name monkey for monkey1 seems to have ‘stuck’ OK. I don’t think it doomed the language or anything and monkey is sort of a known quantity in the indie game dev scene now as far as I can tell. I even catch the odd monkey t-shirt popping up on facebook now and then (OK, twice)!
Would more people be trying out monkey2 if it had a different name? I guess it’s possible, but I doubt it. What I do know is that rebranding now would be a MAJOR PITA and would throw away any/all goodwill the name ‘monkey’ has built-up over the last several years.
Yeah I seriously doubt that the name monkey has crippled the user base, but perhaps it’s just made it harder.
Could you not play in the monkey theme and “evolve” the name to something monkey themed, but not so bluntly “monkey”? That way you could get a name that is on brand, and consider other names that have a more universal meaning. You could even play on the evolution idea in how you present the product.
In the UK I would say that the general meaning of the word monkey is “silly”, “stupid”, “simple”, “cheaky”, “naughty”, “fun”, “childish”, “young”, “playful”. As a whole the feel of the title is not overly negative, but from some comments people don’t seem to take the name seriously. I think the difference with monkey compared to say ruby, lua, c, etc is that perhaps they target their audience a bit better. They are all just adjectives in the end, but sometimes certain words are more suited to certain audiences. It’s also harder to compete with search engine results when you pick something like monkey; simply because monkies and programming are two wildly different subjects.
Personally I don’t mind the monkey brand, I think it’s a fun name, but it is definitely interesting seeing some people’s reactions when they ask what it’s coded in.
Out of interest, is the name of version 2 final? (E.g. Will other names be considered for when the language reaches a stable release)

Make unobtrusive nice code instantlyNovember 25, 2016 at 11:17 am in reply to: class with Interface and super class cant have shared method name #5433But check my description in OP. What if Base is in a module that I don’t own. For example the Resource module.
Ah ha, well that was a pain in the ass!
If you do:
[/crayon]Monkey123[crayon-5cb9c4692b8f4021601170 inline="true" ]#ImportWithout any string, then it doesn’t identify an error file/line.
Another potential clean up then.
I seem to have created a typo (perhaps) somewhere in my code and I am getting the following build output:
***** Building app ‘C:/dev/projects/monkey2/itemMaker/code/mainWindow.monkey2’ *****
Parsing…
[1] : Error : Expecting string literal***** Uncaught Monkey 2 Throwable *****
Struggling to find where this error is!
Any chance to get the file this was thrown from, reporting in build?
I havn’t converted spine module to mx2 yet, I will get around to it at some point but it sounds like there might be a solution for the interim.
Crikey, one simple request opens up a massive can of worms! Cheers for the continued effort
It does not work
You confirmed with your answer. I wasn’t sure if I had the syntax wrong.
Sometimes some of my best ideas come at the last hour of development! Looking forward to giving the new pyro stuff a go!
